All Aboard Florida’s Brightline will pay for some crossing maintenance — but not on the Treasure Coast

In an apparent attempt to strong-arm local governments, Brightline will pay for pricey crossing maintenance for some communities that have not opposed its project, a gesture that could amount to millions of dollars of savings for taxpayers outside the Treasure Coast.  

Crossing maintenance has long been a contentious issue for Brightline and local-government opponents, who argue contracts they entered into with the Florida East Coast Railway decades ago should not automatically apply to Brightline, the $3.1 billion passenger railroad which will share the tracks with Florida East Coast Railway’s existing freight service.
